2006 National Safe Communities Conference Information

YOUNG WORKERS

Since its designation as a safe community, C-K Safe Communities has engaged in significant workplace injury prevention for young workers.  In partnership with the Industrial Accident Prevention Association, local champions have delivered the IAPA’s Young Worker Awareness Program (YWAP) to area secondary schools.  Area schools have also participated in the annual WSIB safety video contest.  C-K was actively involved in developing and piloting the IAPA’s successful LINK (Learning Innovative New Knowledge).  Local secondary schools have participated in, and won first place, in the Drama competition where students develop a workplace-safety themed live multi-media performance.  They perform at their home schools, are judged, then have gone on to present to over 2000 students at the IAPA’s Annual Conference and Trade Show.  School drama classes at JMSS, CKSS and Ursuline College have also received monetary prizes.  Innovative partnership activities between WDSS and LKDS and local industries have expanded the students’ safety and injury prevention knowledge.  These activities have been hosted by the C-K Safe Communities Coalition.
